Atlantis by AxelMedellin Atlantis by AxelMedellin
I hate doing landscapes and backgrounds... well, actually I like them, but they are an awful lot of work, and there's so much that can go wrong with them... but I love when they're finished ;)... this is what I've always thought the lost city would be, something several sizes bigger than life...

This is lovely. I like that the color scheme is different from the cliched greens and blues when one thinks of Atlantis.

Great job with the water too.

...Have you ever played Magic the Gathering? Cause the creature thing on the right panel on the left side of the big entrance looks very reminiscent of one of the creature types in the game. If you have played Magic, or do play magic, it looks like a sliver...
It's a nice piece, and the rest of yours I've seen boot ass as well.

I like it, you've put in lots of work and it has paid off.

I first thought that entryway was about 3meters (~9ft) high, then noticed the ship which blew the scale out totally. I can see how you've tried to make the city look huge but it only reallt makes the boat look like a toy. The city has been designed in human scale, so the towers, fountains and arches all look familiar and we think of them to be only a few meters/feet tall. If you take it to the scale of the ship, those falls are higher than Niagra Falls and should be pelting up so much mist you can hardly see and the guide rails on the buildings in the background would be taller than modest houses.

I've been studying perspectives in design for the last few months and I think it might be getting to me =p

backgrounds can be very irritating in ways especially when you have to fit characters in them. nice job on the concepts. kind of like roman architecture?

I agree with you entierly.. the most difficult part of drawing for me is including a background which is why most often I just choose to do without (something I have to work on :P )

Anyways, I love the sence of scale in this picture. I could imagine myself there everything towering over me like the monumentous works of stone they are. A Grand job!

Dammit, this would be a great consept art for some movie, I would definitely love to see this picture come alive. This architecture looks very unique to my eyes and doesn´t loan too heavily from exsisting architecture. The coloring is great as well. I´m off to see the rest of your gallery.

He, he, I don't think the hi-tech works for Atlantis in particular... I loved the approach they used in the Disney movie, ancient and forgotten tech... anyway... thanks and take care

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Another wonderful image.

I'm currently thinking of something knew. A clock-tower. Inside are clockwork beings being constructed; and bronze gears is a recuring theme. I could go on, like say gravity is somehow lower in this place; as to reduce the number of stairs needed (in some more powerful constructs, removed the need altogether) and stuff. I dunno. I don't really plan on thinking the whole idea through.

I'm not sure I have a method... mostly I go out and just see things, you find gold where you least expect it (there's that story about Star Wars, that they designed Boba Fett's ship from a lampost that was in front of the studio)... I have three or four sketching days a year, when I sit with a bunch of books with photographs (maps, planes, stones, animals, coins, you name it) and flip through them, doing a quick sketch of anything that looks interesting... then I go back, and start seeing weird stuff in the lines, and ideas pop up, I start playing with them...

There you go...

Goodness, this...Wow. I neither have the patience, nor the skill to be able to pull something like this out of my hat. Straight lines I couldn't draw with help, details and buildings escape me. This is an amazing design and picture. Woot.
