I do few of these, and I wonder why, since spaceships were the reason I fell in love with science fiction in the first place... well, maybe it's hard doing them without borrowing Star Wars' riffs...

This would be an enormous thing... every spire containing the population of a small city, the "mouth" some tenths of miles in diameter so it can scoop enough hydrogen for propulsion...

And I sounded soooooooooo nerd, didn't I? :P

That's a thing of beauty. Can I have a huge version of it for my big monitor's desktop?

What is the hydrogen engine transfer to fuel idea? How much hydrogen is in space? (not being mean im actually very curious...) I am doing a concept of a space ship....but it contains solar systems inside of its main compartment. Kind of like a mobile viewing area only its huge, and these space ships are what make up the universe and maybe the universe is inside a giant ship as well..and so on :D I really like your concept though!

Thanks!

Actually, hydrogen is pretty scattered in space... only a few atoms per cubic mile. For a ramscoop to work, and actually create impulse, the scoop would need a surface of hundreds of square miles... but here we are assuming we have particularly powerful electromagnets forming a net to catch and attract atoms from a large area of space.
I think ;)

So the hydrogen propulsion is like a hydrogen contained bomb? The explosion provides forward momentum while the blast and radiation are focused through an exhaust terminal and the radiation could be used as a heating element? I sounds like a super legit premise since you only need a few hydrogen atoms to cause a reaction, but how far could a few atoms propel a ship that size?
