TLIID 213. The League of Extraordinary Monsters by AxelMedellin TLIID 213. The League of Extraordinary Monsters by AxelMedellin
Girls and boys, Happy Halloween!

This week at The Line it is Drawn, obviously, is about comic characters mashing up with horror movies, stories, etc.
Alan Moore's league of Extraordinary Monsters was suggested, with the Universal Monsters to make it totally bait for me. Extra brownie points to whomever gets all the references in the background!

If I may say so, I very rarely have this much fun doing a drawing. Monster dvd marathon for today!

Again, have fun, folks!

Supercool. And I'm wishing that one reference really was intended to be Fred Astaire in Year Without a Santa Clause. Perhaps Heat Miser, too? :)

I'd be soooo all over that movie.

Background - Kong.  Mars Attacks (w/dinosaurs).  Medusa.  Ebira claw?  Nosferatu.  Cthulhu.  Godzilla (natch). The Golem.  "Fred Astaire" in Year Without A Santa.  Ymir from 20 Million Miles To Earth.  The Kraken.  One of Doctor Frankenstein's transformers.  Them Giant Ant head.  The Cronos piece.

Pretty good spotting!

Actually the "dinosaur" would be Vermithrax Pejorative from Dragonslayer... but that would be my bad, I could have made it a lot more look-alike.

I'll search for Ebira, but keeping with the theme, this is a giant crab claw from Mysterious Island.

And I DO have to check that Fred Astaire look... but this is Dr. Pretorious, from Bride of Frankenstein.

But that's quite a great movie background you have!

No... no worries on Vermithrax.  It's been a while since I've read my Dragonslayer Marvel Movie Edition, and since the Martian looked as if it were sharing the same bubble...)

Ebira was in Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster - he was a giant crab.  A fiddler crab, which had the same assymetrical claws as the Mysterious Island one.  Also, Ebira's little claw would still be too big for that room.

The surgery cap read as "fluffy Santa hat" in my observation. :D

holy shit... lotsa references! *super nerdery*

King Kong
Count Orlock (Nosferatu)
Cthulhu statue? skull?
Rhedosaurus Skull?
Martian (Mars Attacks) Skull? (or a skull of the aliens from 'Invasion of the Saucer Men' or a Mutant skull from 'This Island Earth')
Godzilla
Kraken (Clash of Titans) drawing
Crab Claw from Mysterious Island
Medusa's Head
Don't know what's under Medusa's Head
Illustration of a Giant Squid, perhaps from '20,000 Leagues Under The Sea'?
Frankenstein Tesla Coil?
The Golden 'Spider' device from 'Cronos'
Head of a Giant Ant from 'THEM!!'
The Golem
Dr. Pretorius from 'Bride of Frankenstein'

What's the thing to the right of the Cthulhu head? Above the Godzilla photo and beneath Rhedosaurus's skull.

Excellent work catching them! Bravo!

That under Medusa's head is a Jenny Hanniver.

I hadn't thought of the similarity of the alien skulls, but you got it right the first time, it's from Mars Attacks.

That thing to the right of Chtulhu is actually the lamest of them all, that would be Snow White's fossilized apple...

Man this is fantastic. Every time I look at it...I see something new. Like, I didn't even notice the giant ant in the background from the film THEM.There is almost just too much stuff to list here hahah. But I love it. It is nice to see some of the lesser known guys get the spotlight for a while :) Awesome work!

I get almost all the references except for the picture of the guy under the picture of Nosferatu, the crab claw, the beetle in the jar and the object directly below Medusa's head, what are they?

The guy is Dr. Pretorious, the antagonist in James Whale's Bride of Frankenstein.

The crab claw is from the Ray Harryhaussen's (not actually the director, but that's the easiest way to identify the movie) Mysterious Island.

The Beetle is the Cronos device from Guillermo del Toro's Cronos.

And the object directly below Medusa is a Jenny Hanniver, a fake sea monster crafted from several marine species. There was an incredibly cheesy but incredibly fun movie called The Bermuda Depths, where this thing plays an important part.

I strongly suggest you add those to your required viewing list ;)

I caught Nosferatu, King Kong, Gojira, and the Golem was first to catch :D
My only problem with this piece is that when the movie adaptation actually comes out, the Hollywood suits will try to make the cast young and hip and adding Beetlejuice   Oh wait, that happened already...

There's a Nosferatu, but I'm not quite sure who that is under him... The facehugger, Martian (Mars Attacks?), Kraken, and a giant ant from Them!

That under Nosferatu is Doctor Pretorius, from Bride of Frankenstein... and that's not a facehugger, it's the Cronos device ;)
